The Origin of Gender

In Chapter 5, the book went over the concept of gender, sex & youth. This topic is something that about 15 years ago was something that was not discussed as often, but in today's education is a subject that comes up a lot more often. This PBS video was something that I thought really brought up a lot of great points that were also discussed in the book.

The Teenage Brain

For class we had the opportunity to watch a PBS video on a look Inside the Teenage Brain, which was really well put together! Since I enjoyed watching that video, I wanted to find another one that also discussed the topic.

This is such an important topic because it is something we, as teachers, need to keep in mind while educating our students. These resources will help us better relate and understand our students in our classroom.

Suicide Prevention

Website - https://afsp.org/about-suicide/

During class we were linked to look at The American Foundation of Suicide Prevention - this website brought together a lot of great resources that helped us understand so many different aspects of youth and suicide. This really taught me many important aspects that we need to be aware of.

Teens go through a lot of very confusing and difficult times as the transition into adulthood. This resource is something I plan to look back on often as I go through my career as an educator.

Relationships

During this week in class we learned about teen relationships and the impact that relationships during this age has on youth. The video below bring in the voice from youth/teens talking about these different aspects, which showed me how different each teenager thinks during these points of their life.
This is something that we need to remember when we step into our classrooms - each child in our class has a different outlook on relationships and importance during this time of their life. I am hoping these concepts can help me have a more understanding mentality in the classroom.

Employed Youth

The above chart shows the number of youth employed between the ages 16 - 24 in the United States. This was really interesting to see, as well as played on the concepts that we learned during class, especially youth being employed while they are in high school. In class we discussed how being employed can affect the mentality of students while in school, and the video below brings up more aspects that talk about how important it is to empower youth while in school. Although this can cause more stress on youth, I believe it is extremely important to empower them with opportunities to make a change.
This portion of class is something that I believe is important to remember when in the classroom - although it is not "work", it is extremely important to empower our students.

Teens & Alcohol

The poem below is something that I personally remember from a time while I was in high school, during Every Fifteen Minutes program at our school. This topic was one of the last that we went over during class, but also to me one of the most important. This section is something that we need to keep in mind everyday while being in the classroom. Being sure to check in with students, as well as having programs such as every fifteen minutes to bring up these important topics is something that should continue.

Every Fifteen Minutes Poem:

"I went to this party mom
I remembered what you said
You told me not to drink mom
So I drank soda instead.”

“I felt real proud inside mom
The way you said I would
Even though all my friends mom
Told me that I should.”

“I know I did the right thing mom
I know your always right
The party's finally ending mom
As everyone drove out of sight.”

“As I got inside my car mom
I knew I'd get home in one piece
'Cause the way you made me feel mom
So responsible so sweet.”

“I started to drive away mom
As I pulled into the road
The other guy didn't see me mom
And hit me like a load.”

“I lay there on the pavement mom
I hear the policeman say
The other guy was drunk mom
Now I'm the one to pay.”

“I'm lying here dying mom
I wish you'd get here soon
How come this happened to me mom
My life bursted like a balloon.”

“There's blood all around me mom
Most of it is mine
I hear the paramedics say mom
I'll die in a short time.”

“He didn't know where he was going mom
He was probably at the same party as I
There's one big difference though mom
He's going to live while I die.”

“Why do people drink mom
It can ruin your whole life
I'm feeling sharp pains mom
Just like a burning knife.”

“The man who hit me mom
Is walking, it's no fair
I'm lying here dying mom
While all he does is stare.”

“Tell my brother not to cry mom
Tell dad to be brave
For when I'm in heaven mom
Write my name upon my grave.”

“Someone should have told him mom
Not to drink and drive
If they'd often take the time mom
I'd still be alive.”

“My breath is growing short mom
I'm becoming very scared
Please don't cry for me mom
'Cause when I needed you, you were there.”

“I have one last question mom
Before I say good-bye
I didn't even drink mom
So why am I the one to die.”

“This is the end mom
I wish I could look you in the eye
To say these final words mom
I LOVE YOU & GOOD-BYE.”

Media & Multitasking

This topic is one that I already am seeing in my classroom. Students want to have their phones in their hands every minute of the day, including while sitting in class where they should be learning. However, this idea is something that students don't seem to understand is an issue. During class I wrote about a peer reviewed article that discussed this point. Children are unable to retain as much date, because they know that they can just look up the concepts quickly later on.
This is something we need to be sure we are making a point to not use as much technology in class. It can be a helpful resource to link really cool concepts, however, students need to be aware of how to learn without technology.

GATE Students

Being sure that every student in class is engaged and learning in class is important. During this section we learned about how all students require different things in order to keep them interested and engaged - the TedX below continues to discuss this idea.

Birth Order

The role that the birth order plays in a youth life is something that we touched on in class - the video below goes into more detail about how this truly can affect ones life.
Although this is something that we may not think about a lot in our classroom - we do need to remember these concepts. Often times we have a different perception of the youngest sibling walking in to our class because maybe we knew their older sibling

Gender Bias - Youth & Adults

In this section we learned about how gender impacts youth in many different ways - I linked the video below as a connection to the idea that this sadly is something that is not going away in our society. The TedX talks about gender bias as adults.

Although gender bias is something that we need to be sure is not impacting our students, we need to just remember, no matter the gender, students are going to learn differently. It is most important to base the learning to the students, not just assume they will learn a certain way due to their gender.

Emotional Development

During this course we talked a lot about youth emotional development - the video below just continues to touch on all of those ideas. Children who are affected by emotional trauma while growing up are more likely to have many other problems when they grow up, including higher risks of cancer and other diseases. This was shocking to me, however, the video discussed how important it is for every child, no matter family income level, to receive health care.
I believe this concept is something that I hope companies in California, and other states, continue to keep in mind when opening clinics. The ability for children to have the support they need is extremely beneficial.

Puberty & The Brain

Teens have many different issues that they have to face during their life, including the transition through puberty. Puberty has a huge impact on teens, however, one thing I learned in this class is how the age for onset puberty is becoming younger and younger.
This is something we are going to have to stay very aware of as educators. If the age of onset puberty is something we are no longer mainly focusing on in high school, but instead elementary school, the topics we focus on learning during these grades as teachers may need to be adjusted.

Adolescents around the world

Adolescents from around the world all have many different things in common, no matter where they grow up. In our course we went over many different aspects of life brain development and impacts of the life of an adolescent. The video below is another interesting addition to all of the concepts we learned over the 8 weeks in this course. One main concept that I learned in this class is that teachers, parents, scientists, etc. are still learning new concepts and ideas about youth daily and it is important to keep learning.
This course is something that will be able to be used in our daily lives as teachers and educators - the concepts will help us in many different ways to be better at our jobs.
